Tomb-sweeping Day is one of the 24 seasonal festivals in China, which falls on April 4 and 6 each year. After the festival, temperatures rise and rainfall increases. Now is the time for spring ploughing and sowing. But the Qingming Festival is not only a seasonal point to guide farm work, but also a festival of remembrance. This is the most important day of sacrifice. Both the Han and ethnic minorities offer sacrifices to their ancestors and sweep their tombs. Besides, they will not cook on this day and only cold food is served. The Hanshi (Cold Food) Festival usually falls on the day before Tomb Sweeping Day, festival. As our ancestors often extended the day to Tomb Sweeping Day, which was later combined together. On Qingming Festival, all cemeteries are crowded with people who come to sweep tombs and pay their respects. The traffic got very heavy on the way to the cemetery. Todays customs have been greatly simplified. After a brief sweep of the tomb, people offer food, flowers and favorites for the dead, then burn incense and paper money and bow before the monument.
